Two
Seconds Away From
the time I retired from an eight-year professional bull-riding career
until I sculpted this piece I had a recurring dream. The dream was
always the same. A big red bull with huge flat horns and a big fat
neck would come into the chute below me. I would put my bull rope
on him and get on, pull my rope and slide up, nod to go and the dream
would end as the gate was opening. One night after having this dream
this piece flashed into my mind. I instantly got up and started sculpting
what was in my minds eye. The title came from all those years as a
competitor. Many times like all bull riders, I found myself two seconds
away from riding a bull that’s never been ridden, two seconds
away from making a high scoring ride or even two seconds away from
showing up on time. When the piece was finished I never had the dream
again. Many of my pieces have come to me in dreams. I dream them till
the subconscious image is so vivid that when I start the piece it
is like my hands are just tools putting on the clay as the sculpture
creates itself. |
