Brutal
innocence depicts the conditions of the cattle during the winter of
1886 & 87.
When winter finally broke and the snowdrifts receded it was said that
a man could walk the full length of a draw never stepping on solid
ground, the ranges of the northwest were littered with millions of
cattle carcasses. This winter changed the face of the cattle industry
in the region forever. Many large free grazing operations were bankrupt
opening the door for more small homestead outfits to take hold and
flourish.
